More Board Books, July 15, 2009

Ages four and up will love these four "busy tots" board books. The titles I was able to examine were Birthday Party, Shopping Day, Summer Vacation and Little Helper. They are all designed to show teach words that are associated with each activity. Photographs are used rather drawings to help with connections to real world. A variety of tactile surfaces are embedded within the photo to stimulate active participation.

Reading level: Ages 4-8
Publisher: Ticktock Media, Ltd. (May 1, 2009)
ISBN-10: 1846968011
ISBN-13: 978-1846968013

What do Rabbits do?
What do Kangaroos do?
What do Cats do?
What do Monkeys do?

These are four books in a series that engage toddlers age four and up in exploring animals with simple facts and first words. The drawings are vibrant colors with funny playful animals. The text describes their behaviors and characteristics.

For example:

Author Liesbet Slegers, Children's Books

I wanted to share two different children book series written by the talented writer Liesbet Slegers.

The Guess What series contains titles that include but not limited to,Guess What I Hear?, Guess What I See? Guess Who I Am? and Guess What I Feel?

Clavis Books
$7.95US/$8.95/CAN

As we all know children love to play guessing games, and Ms. Slegers uses this inquisitive approach to engage young toddlers. After listening to the question, they will see four pictures on the facing page to choose an answer. By choosing correctly they will make a text connection. They get to find out by lifting a flap what the answer should be. I love the responsive Q & A format of this series and I know children will love them too.

For example: Drip. Splash. Water is falling from the sky. Drip. Splash. It falls on the flowers and on the grass... What do I hear?

The Kevin and Katie series is about two small children who face familiar events all young kids experience at some time. The simply drawn pudgy characters look like early childhood drawings. Their clothes stand out in bold primary colors often revealing a little belly button adding to their loving appeal for children.
Clavis Books
$12.95US/$13.95/CAN
Reading Level: 7+

Some titles that were examined were Kevin and Katie, Katie Moves, Kevin Discovers Spring, Katie Discovers Summer, Kevin Goes to School. You can't miss with these stories that hit upon the heart of the emotions and the wonder of new life experiences. Appropriate for 2+ years.

Published by Ticktock Media, Ltd.

This series of preschool board books have just the right combination of rhyming verse with inserted cutouts of various tactile surfaces to engage inquisitive listeners. These science based concept books are adorable. Their vibrant eye-catching pictures are an engaging source for teaching counting, colors, opposites and simple first words with funny rhyme and verse. The textures vary from a soft supple patent leather of an Orca whale to a sandpaper starfish. These books are tempting treats for the young tots. Read alone 4-5 year old, read independently 6+ years.

Among the titles examined were: Zoom Into Space, Ocean, Dinosaurs, Garden, Farm, Under the Ocean with the Little Yellow Submarine, At the Beach with Snappy the Little Crab and my personal favorite, Jungle.
